well the dust seems to have settled on the 'Wannacry' and 'Petya" attacks with little effect on Australian business. the risk you face from cyber attacks has certainly not abated. the graphic above released by the Australian Government involves data from 2014. as concerning as the figures are, there can be no doubt that current statistics would be far worse, and that many losses currently go unreported. the real picture is undoubtedly much more serious than the image shows. something you may have missed is the new mandatory data breach regime. What is it you say? new legislation that requires businesses to report any suspected data breach to the Government and anyone whose data may have been effected. so imagine your business suspects that data has been breached. how do you go about telling your customers, without ruining your reputation? if you don't report the breach you will be liable to hefty fines (up to $1.8M for a Company!). what if you are the victim of ransomware? how do you know if you should pay the ransom? who do you turn to for help? will your local IT guy have the expertise to deal with it? how much will it cost to restore your system and data? fortunately there is an affordable solution. Cyber Insurance. austbrokers central coast have investigated the market and can provide cost effective solutions for small business. Well known Insurance commentator and insider Professer Alan Manning has issued a scathing attack on the NSW Government. The usually reserved Manning has not pulled any punches in his blog calling the decision a 'balls-up' (a bungled or badly carried out task or action; a mess) Part of Mannings blog is reproduced below: 'Let us review the facts. The New South Wales government are the last mainland state in Australia to remove the levy. They did not have to reinvent the wheel, all they had to do is copy one of the other states that have gone through the change and pick the one that worked best. They chose Victoria to model their change on, which to my thinking was the most unfair but created the greatest windfall for government and made it the most difficult for the insurance industry. (But this was all masked by beating up on the insurance industry). They engaged high profile chest beating Allan Fels with huge fan fare to oversea it all. Some people complain and with just one month to go it all gets put on hold. Like all the people who wrote, I cannot believe this. All this delay is going to do is for people to question the ability of the public servant, the over paid consultants and politicians and allow those who currently are not paying their way but benefiting from the Emergency Services to continue to do so. I keep asking myself over and over again, how can this situation have occurred? In the meantime, perhaps the New South Wales government and Fels could stop bashing up the insurance industry and painting us, the unpaid tax collectors of the past who did not want the thankless task in the first place, and using the cost of the industry beat up to look at their own performance.' Hard to argue with the sentiment
